Online water quality monitoring of water and wastewater is of growing interest to utilities all over the world. It is an essential component in pro-active process and asset management, optimal utility performance and maximum cost-efficiency. Since 1980s and 90s, online monitoring instrumentation has developed from portable versions of existing laboratory equipment to innovative, stand-alone, remotely controlled instruments. At the moment, however, routine online water quality monitoring is restricted to a relatively small number of basic parameters confined to key nodes in collection, treatment, and distribution systems.
