Everyone thinks they are good at detecting deception, but studies show that even those who conduct investigation interviews as part of their job are likely to successfully tell whether someone is lying just over half the time. They often turn to accusatory or interrogation-style interviews to try to intimidate subjects into confessing. But specific training in conversational-style interview techniques and a strategic approach to questioning can drastically increase their success.

The Strategic Use of Evidence, or SUE, technique is particularly effective at getting to the truth in an interview by using the information the investigator already knows to question the subject strategically. Swedish researchers found that interviewers trained in this strategy detected deception with an accuracy rate of 85.4 per cent, compared to untrained interviewers at 56.1 per cent.

The webinar will cover:
  • The importance of conversation rather than interrogation
  • Strategies for building rapport
  • Determining which facts are already known
  • Questioning techniques using known facts
  • How the SUE technique and the PEACE model work together
