This event will describe the results of BUGWORKERS, a four year European project on the production of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). PHB is produced by certain types of bacteria as an energy store. It is then solvent extracted from the bacteria. PHB is totally bio‑derived and totally biodegradable.

The aim of BUGWORKERS was to develop a new production route to PHB using non-food grade sugars, derived from agricultural wastes, as a feedstock and by using environmentally friendly solvents.

Webinar attendees will learn about the fermentation processes by which PHB and its copolymers are produced.

PHB requires certain additives to improve its properties, so the workshop will also focus on the formulation of the material and the ways in which the polymer can be processed to produce plastic parts.
  • Introduction to the Project -Itziar Carracedo, AIMPLAS
  • Production of polyhydroxyalkanoates from agro-industrial residues - Bruno Sommer Ferreira, Biotrend
  • Compounding of PHB - Ana Espert, AIMPLAS
  • Using PHB in Manufacturing Door Entry Systems - Daniel Frasquet, Fermax
